questions & answers |
YOUR CHILD CARE PLAYGROUND Q. Where should it go? A. Many child care facilities consider their playground a primary selling tool for their business. The ideal site adds to the child care's "curb appeal" to visiting parents and children. A flat site, free of obstructions and trees, is easiest to work with. Thea area must, of course, be fenced for safety, with gate latches that can only be opened by adults. In some areas, providers are opting for solid fencing as an additional safety feature, shielding children from view by outsiders. Q. How big should it be? A. The number of children who will be using the play area at the same time detrepermines how much space you need to safely accommodate them, both on the equipment and in the perimeter area. In addition to play equipment, you may want room for a trike/bike path. Your Ermold Park & Recreations Products representative can help you determine the right size play area, equipment and amenities for your center's available space. Your state or local government may have regulations governing preschool age playgrounds; be sure to check with your Department of Health or Social Services before making your decision. Q. To shade or not to shade? A. Exposure to harmful UV rays has become a hot topic. Some states already have, or are working on, legislation that requires adequate amounts of playground shade. Depending upon your climate, you may want trees, shaded structures or canopies around your play area to provide needed shade. Before selecting trees or shrubs, consult with a landscape architect or nursery to select the proper species. Exposed roots are a safety issue; falling fruit, poisonous leaves, tempting berries and other objects can cause problems with your and curious children. |
